What Is a Beam in Building Construction

Beams are horizontal structures that play a fundamental role in supporting buildings, bridges, and other various structures. These horizontal or sloping structural members distribute loads and forces, ensuring the stability and integrity of the entire structure.

Beams are essential in building construction, providing essential support and stability to various building structures and ensuring the integrity and safety of the entire structure.

These structures are prominent in transferring weight and ensuring a building’s foundation is firmly planted.

So, Whether it’s a simple residential building or a complex one, utilizing the right type of beam is crucial to the overall strength and durability of the project.

In this article, we will explore a beam structure, the different types of beams in construction, their unique characteristics, and why it is important to understand them. An understanding of these essential elements will shed light on how they form the backbone of building constructions and enable you to make an informed decision.

What Is a Beam Structure?

In building construction, beam structures play a vital role as an essential building component for load-bearing that resists vertical loads, shear forces, and bending moments. Typically, beams are horizontal or sloping members spanning two or more supports, distributing the load imposed on them. Their primary purpose is to transfer applied loads to these supports, to maintain balance, and to ensure the structure’s integrity under both its weight and external forces.

Beams are predominantly used in various structures, such as buildings, bridges, roofs, and more, providing significant strength and stability. Thus, selecting the most suitable beam type hinges on the unique requirements and design specifications of the individual construction.

In most situations, the load distribution pattern includes a slab, beam, column, and foundation. This means the beam is inserted below the foundation and column to provide more comprehensive support throughout the structure. The primary purposes of beam structure include:

  • Offsetting shear forces and beam momentum
  • Resisting loads
  • Distributing loads in a uniform fashion
  • Uniting the structure together

Types of Beams

There are a few primary beams used in building and construction, and they include;

Cantilever Beam:

A cantilever is a rigid structural element extending horizontally and unsupported at one end. Typically, it extends from a flat vertical surface, such as a wall, to which it must be firmly attached. Like other structural elements, a cantilever can be formed as a beam, plate, truss, or slab.

This design allows it to carry loads over the unsupported span without additional support at the free end. When subjected to a structural load at its far, unsupported end, the cantilever carries the load to the support, where it applies a shear stress and a bending moment

Cantilever construction allows overhanging structures without additional support.

These beams are typically used in structures like balconies and bridges.

    Simply Supported Beams:

As the name suggests, it is supported at both ends and carries the load across its span. The weight is transferred to the supports, creating upward forces, and the beam resists bending due to these forces.

A simply supported beam has a pinned support at one end and roller support at the other. Depending on the load applied, it undergoes shearing and bending. It is one of the simplest structural elements, typically rests on two supports, and is free to move horizontally.

They are found in various applications, including bridges, beams in buildings, and beds of machine tools.

      Fixed Beam:

A fixed beam is fixed on both ends of the beam with supports. This beam type does not allow bending moment production and will not have any vertical movement or rotation. These beams are firmly fixed and restrained at both ends, preventing rotation at their supports, and are highly effective at resisting bending moments. Fixed beams are commonly used in continuous structures like multi-span bridges, large buildings, trusses, and similar structures.

        Overhanging Beams:

An overhanging beam is supported at two different areas, typically at one end and in the middle of the beam, but does not have support at the other end, leaving it hanging. This additional extension creates an overhang, which can vary in length depending on the design requirements. This type of beam extends beyond the walls or columns, and the overhanging section of the beam is unsupported. An overhanging beam combines a supported beam and a cantilever beam.

Overhanging beams find application when construction requires an extended platform, such as canopies or balconies.

          Continuous Beam:

A continuous beam has two or more supports that reinforce the beam. These supports are used under and between the beams and are typically vertical. Continuous beams are thought to be more economical when compared to other beam types.

These Beams are an assembly of multiple beams connected to form an unbroken span over several supports. The primary advantage of continuous beams is their ability to distribute loads more evenly, reducing bending moments and improving overall structural stability. They are commonly used in bridges and structures with large openings.

            Plinth Beam:

A plinth beam is a reinforced concrete beam constructed at the ground level of a building, connecting all the columns. Its purpose is to provide a stable platform for the building and prevent differential settlement of the structure. They are essential in areas prone to soil erosion, earthquakes, and other seismic activities.

The plinth beam is constructed between the wall and its foundation. It prevents the extension or propagation of cracks from the foundation into the wall above when the foundation suffers from settlement. Plinth beams distribute the load of the wall over the foundation evenly.

              Function of Beams

              1. Load-bearing support: Beams are primarily designed to bear loads, such as the weight of the structure itself, the occupants, and any additional external forces acting upon it.
              2.  : Beams distribute their loads to vertical supports, ensuring the weight is evenly spread and minimizing stress concentrations.
              3. Structural stability: By effectively transferring loads to supports and maintaining equilibrium, beams contribute to the overall stability and safety of the structure.
              4. Spanning openings: Beams enable the construction of open spaces within a structure, such as doorways, windows, or large open areas, by spanning the gap between supports.
              5. Supporting other structural elements: Beams often work with other structural components, like columns, walls, and slabs, providing the necessary support and transferring loads among these elements.

Benefits of Beams in Building Construction

              1. Aesthetic appeal: Beams are designed and integrated into building structures, enhancing their visual appeal through exposed beams or creative structural designs.
              2. Structural integrity: By providing load-bearing support, weight distribution, and stability, beams significantly contribute to the overall structural integrity of a building.
              3. Cost-effectiveness: Beams offer a cost-effective solution for transferring loads and spanning openings, reducing the need for additional supports and minimizing material costs.
