The basic components of a building include the foundation, floors, walls, and roofs. These components serve the purpose of supporting, enclosing, and protecting the building.
Buildings are complex structures that serve as shelters, workplaces, and gathering places for humans and human activities. But have you ever wondered about what components make up a building?
A building comprises several components, each having its purpose and requirements. Each of these elements plays a different role in supporting the building. Without them, the building is not complete. However, basic components are peculiar to each building and depend on the type of building and the region in which it is being built.
Knowing these components and how they interact will guarantee optimal function.
In this article, we will explore the various components that come together to form a building.
Components of a building
Below, I’ve outlined the basic components of most buildings, and they include:
- Exterior components:
The exterior of any building is the first thing that grabs our attention. These components provide aesthetics and protect the building from external factors. They include;
- Roofs: A roof is the uppermost part of a building whose main function is to enclose the space and to protect it from the effects of weather elements such as rain, wind, sun, heat, and snow. A good roof is just as essential as a safe foundation. Just as a well-designed foundation secures the building against demolition starting at the bottom. Similarly, a good roof affords protection for the building itself and what the building contains and prevents deterioration beginning from the top.
- Windows and doors: The main function of a door in a building is to serve as a connecting link between the internal parts and to allow free movement to the outside of the building. In contrast, windows are generally provided to allow for light and ventilation.
- Structural components:
The structural components ensure the building’s stability and integrity. They include:
- Foundation: A foundation is the base of any building structure. The Foundation of a building is the lower portion that transfers loads from the superstructure to the ground, ensuring the building’s stability and safety. It is a critical component of building construction because it prevents settlement, cracking, and structural damage.
- Walls: A wall is a vertical structure that acts as a partition within the building area and forms the outer limit of the building. The purposes of walls in buildings are to support roofs, floors, and ceilings; to enclose a space as part of the building; envelope along with a roof to give buildings form; and to provide shelter and security.
- Columns: Columns are the necessary components for any building structure that maintain the structural stability of the entire building. Columns are built from the building’s foundation to the topmost part of the building. They are slender vertical columns commonly constructed using concrete or sometimes even stones, bricks, and metallic structures. Columns are mainly of two types: structural and architectural columns. A structural column’s primary purpose is to resist the load acting on the slab above it and transmit it to the ground. On the other hand, Architectural columns are fundamentally built to improve the aesthetics of the building structure.
- Slabs and beams: Both slabs and beams are horizontal components of a building. While beams are slender structures and slabs are flat structures. Slabs make up the floor and ceilings, transferring load to the beams; the beams then transmit the loads to the vertical columns. The shape and size of beams and slabs depend on the structural requirement and are usually constructed using reinforced concrete.
- Damp proof course, DPC: As the name suggests, DPC is a waterproofing material coated on the basement level to avoid surface water rising to the walls and the superstructure. They are barriers usually installed horizontally in the walls of buildings near ground level to prevent moisture from growing into the structure. They are a critical element in building construction, particularly in areas prone to moisture intrusion.
- Floor system: Floor systems are the horizontal planes that must support loads, people, furnishings, and the weight of the floor construction itself. Floor systems transfer their load horizontally across space to the beam, columns, or load-bearing walls.
- Interior components:
These components create a functional and visually appealing space that is suitable for the intended purpose of the building. They include:
- Ceilings: Ceiling refers to the overhead surface or surfaces covering a room and the underside of a roof. Ceilings are often used to hide roof construction. Ceilings help create separation between spaces; they permit the distribution of light and sound around a room. They also accommodate elements such as vents, lighting, sprinkler heads, and so on, as well as conceal other services such as ducts, pipes, and wiring.
- Finishing trim: This includes precise finish carpentry and interior trim work, including crown molding, window casings, and baseboards. Trim is used to conceal construction, to provide a finished appearance at gaps and joints between materials, and to accommodate slight variations between surfaces. Finishing trim is used to hold windows and doors in place. Finishing trim is otherwise known as window sealant or caulk.
- Mechanical components:
Mechanical components ensure a safe, comfortable, and healthy indoor environment. They include:
- HVAC(heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems): HVAC systems provide indoor environmental comfort to occupants by maintaining thermal comfort and acceptable indoor air quality. Mechanical systems offer ventilation, reduce air infiltration, and maintain pressure relationships between spaces.
- Plumbing systems: Plumbing systems include the network of pipes, fixtures, and fittings responsible for water distribution throughout a building. These systems ensure the availability of clean water for consumption and the proper disposal of wastewater.
- Electrical systems: Electrical systems involve designing and installing wiring, outlets, and fixtures to distribute electricity. They ensure reliable power supply to various devices and equipment within the building.
- Insulation and ventilation: While insulating systems keep the building warm, ventilating systems move air around a building. They all work together to keep the building warm and dry.
- Specialized components:
These components are additional features to enhance the functionality of any building. They include:
- Fire suppression systems: Fire suppression systems play a critical role in ensuring the safety of occupants in a building. These systems include fire alarms, sprinklers, and smoke detectors that detect and suppress fires, minimizing damage and providing valuable time for evacuation.
- Elevators and Lifts: These are vertical transportation systems used in buildings to efficiently move people or goods between floors of a building, ship, or other structure. They are generally powered by electric motors that drive traction cables and counterweight systems or pump hydraulic fluid to raise a cylindrical piston.
- Audio-visual systems: Audio-visual systems allow communication between devices such as cameras and sound systems. AV systems can include a variety of hardware, including video cameras, conference telephones, and interactive whiteboards.
