Built for Global Health: How Dutum Delivered the UNICEF Vaccine Storage Facility

Vaccines save lives, but only when they’re stored properly. That’s where cold chain infrastructure comes in. In countries like Nigeria, where high temperatures and long distances make vaccine storage tricky, having the right kind of facility can make all the difference. That’s why Dutum was proud to partner on the construction of a dry storage facility for UNICEF, a project built to protect health supplies, preserve vaccines, and support reliable medical distribution across the country.

Why vaccine storage matters

Vaccines and other temperature-sensitive medications require storage at specific temperatures, typically between 2°C and 8°C, to remain safe and effective. Without proper cold storage, doses can spoil before they reach the people who need them.

In Nigeria, particularly in rural or remote areas, the challenge is even greater. This is why cold storage isn’t a luxury. It’s essential.

Dutum’s contribution to the UNICEF cold store facility

Dutum was brought in to build a facility that supports vaccine safety from start to finish. Every detail was planned with one question in mind: How do we help life-saving medicine get where it’s needed, without losing its strength?

Our work involved:

  • Custom-built cold rooms with advanced insulation to maintain temperature
  • Backup energy systems to ensure storage stays stable, even during outages
  • Spacious loading bays for easy movement of medical supplies
  • Long-lasting finishes and materials that meet health industry standards

This wasn’t just about delivering on time. It was about building something that health workers, logistics teams, and global partners can count on.

Health logistics done right

The facility plays a critical role in Nigeria’s health logistics. From national stockpiles to local clinics, vaccines now have a safe place to be stored and organised before being transported across the country.

This project doesn’t just support one city or region. It fits into a much bigger goal, strengthening global health systems and improving access to medicine for millions.

Built with care and responsibility

As with every Dutum project, quality came first. But this one had a deeper meaning. We knew that the work happening inside this building, long after construction was done, would affect lives.

Every reinforced panel, every cooling unit, every safety check was part of something much bigger: protecting people’s health.

This is what drives us at Dutum. Not just the materials or the specs, but the real-world value behind the work. It’s why we say yes to projects like this one. Because we know it matters.

Moving forward with purpose

As Nigeria continues to build stronger health systems, facilities like this will play an even bigger role. We’re proud to have been a trusted partner to UNICEF on this project and remain committed to delivering infrastructure that supports health, safety, and access, one site at a time.
