Cold Storage

Constructing Cold Storage for Lagos: Dutum’s Role in Advancing Food Security

In a country where food spoilage continues to affect prices and availability, building the right kind of storage infrastructure is more than a construction project; it’s a direct step toward solving a national challenge. Dutum’s work on the 22,500 sqm Cold Storage Facility at the Lagos State Food Logistics Hub is part of this solution.

Why cold storage matters in Nigeria

Each year, a large portion of fresh produce in Nigeria goes to waste before it ever reaches markets or homes. One major reason is the lack of proper temperature-controlled storage, particularly for perishable goods such as vegetables, fruits, dairy products, and meat.

In Lagos, where millions depend on daily access to fresh food, this issue is more pressing. That’s why cold storage isn’t just about keeping things cool; it’s about preserving food quality, reducing waste, and improving access.

Dutum’s role in building better storage

Dutum was contracted to build part of the cold storage facility at the Lagos Food Logistics Hub, one of the largest of its kind in West Africa. The facility spans 22,500 square meters and is designed to store and manage fresh food safely before distribution.

Our work focused on delivering:

  • Temperature-controlled zones for different product categories
  • Energy-efficient insulation and cooling systems
  • Logistics-friendly layouts for fast loading and unloading
  • Structural quality that supports long-term durability

Each part of the build was carefully planned to meet food safety standards while also considering future expansion.

Supporting food systems that work

The goal of this facility goes beyond just storage. It helps connect farmers, suppliers, and retailers more efficiently. With improved storage and distribution points, food can move more quickly and safely, allowing more people to access fresh, affordable produce.

This is especially important for Lagos, where demand is high and the food supply chain is often stretched thin.

Built with purpose

For Dutum, this project wasn’t just another building. It was a chance to contribute to a long-term solution. By helping create the kind of infrastructure that supports local agriculture and food access, we’re building something that truly matters.

We’re proud to be part of a project that makes a real impact, one that helps reduce food spoilage, supports farmers, and improves everyday access to fresh food.
